Hope For The Nations

Learn more about this Program Program: CHILDREN IN EXTREME POVERTY

All of the children that Hope for the Nations works with are 'at risk' because of the effects of extreme poverty. Poverty impacts children because it hurts families. There are a number of ways in which it does this.

Poverty is a barrier to accessing health services. HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB affect millions of parents each year; without access to treatment, parents are unable to get well, earn a living or care for their children. Sometimes this means that their children are orphaned.

Poverty impacts a family's ability to provide food, shelter and education for all of their family members. In extreme poverty conditions, families may send their children to work rather than to school; in the worst scenario, children are employed in the worst forms of labour or parents sell their children into the trafficking network.

Poverty, in a variety of ways, feeds the cycle of violence in countries that are caught in conflict. Not only does this violence kill parents and children, it also causes major upheaval in the lives of families and communities,  destroying family assets and future opportunities.

Without strategic interventions, poverty tends to be passed from one generation to another. Hope for the Nations believes that by intervening in the lives of the children who are most disadvantaged by poverty - orphans and vulnerable children - we can begin the process of change and the cycle of poverty can be broken. "Today's orphans" can be "tomorrow's leaders".

Joni Eveleigh first went to Kenya in 2008 on a short 3 month volunteer position.  After briefly returning to Canada, Joni again left for Africa, this time for a longer commitment.  Since then Joni has been working tirelessly with widows, street children and in the House of Prayer.

Children's Ministry:

Joni and her team work with 30-35 slum & street children (from ages 3-14).  They teach, train, equip the children in personal spiritual growth and prayer. The children are very relational and eager to learn.

Mama's Ministry:

For the last 2 years, Joni & her team have been teaching approximately 600 women, 3 to 4 times per week.  The teaching centers primarily around spiritual growth and other relevant issues. Many of these women are widows who are very poor, but rich in spirit and in faith.

Kitale House of Prayer:

The Kitale House of Prayer is located in the Kitale slums with Pastor Mary as the leader.  The prayer house is open 24/7 and has both women & men participating in prayer for their country. Pastor Mary teaches on various aspects of prayer three times a week.  Pastor Mary and her team are currently establishing further houses of prayer in Kenya. This ministry brings a profound measure of hope and encouragement to many people who have a great burden for Kenya.

As a family we heard the story of  Samuel,  Rebecca,  Wilister, Lilian, Sharon, and Lucy aged between 4 - 13 yrs. Joni was introduced to this child led household and heard their tragic story. Their father died in a bicycle accident 2 yrs ago leaving a widow with 10 children at home. The oldest 4 children left home and the mother, overwhelmed by the situation couldn't cope and disappered, leaving the children to fend for themselves. All 6 children live together in one small mud hut, and have no adult care.  When Joni first met them, she was moved by compassion and went to the market to buy food for them. They had clearly not eaten for some time and stroked the bags of food in amazement.  Previously, they had been foraging in the dump for food. Joni now vists this family regularly giving them food and support. These are bright smart children who attended school before their family broke down. Education is the key for a brighter future for these children.  As a family we are aiming to raise the funds to send these children back to school.

    Interviewing Joni, 31st December 2009
On New Year’s Eve I interviewed my friend, Joni who has spent 2 years in Kitale, Kenya. She is a missionary there. I asked her a couple of questions.
What impacted you to go to Africa?
“Well, Donna and Ralph Bromley had a big part in it and of course God!”

What is your everyday life like?
“Oh, I do lots of things,” she replied. “I buy groceries for the children, I make hospital runs, in the morning I teach the bible to widows and mamas, at 5-6 pm I teach the children, and lots of other things!” (Joni looks after 30 children and up to 600 mamas!)

What do you miss most in Canada?
“I miss hamburgers,” she said jokingly “and I really miss my church and their style of worship and my family and friends.”

What do you like/dislike about Africa?
“What I love about Africa is the people; they are so beautiful and joyful. They are so grateful for the little they have. Another thing I love about Africa is, believe it or not, the red dirt! I love the feel and smell of the dirt.”

    What is your home like?
”Well, I am very fortunate to life in a proper house not a mud hut like most people do over there. It is white and has cement blocks. As you enter, there are two bedrooms to your left and right and in the center is the living room. If you go through the living room you get to the dining room.”

“Well, thank you Joni for answering these questions.”
    “It was my pleasure”
