Nairobi - Soweto Slums
SOWETO SLUMS - Soweto School
Soweto slums of Nairobi. The area has an estimated population of about 50, 000 people, a majority of whom live below the poverty level i.e. earning less than a dollar a day (Kshs. 76). Poverty, illiteracy and ignorance prevail here, thus making it hard to fight against socio-economic evils such as child abuse, drug abuse, domestic violence, etc. Poverty leads to illiteracy and illiteracy leads to poverty and illiteracy predisposes the children and the entire community to these social evils.
In fact, Kayole/Soweto is one of the slums with the highest crime rates and juvenile delinquencies in Nairobi City. Many are those engaged in drug abuse and peddling. Almost all the children are victims of broken marriages, domestic violence, domestic child labor, early marriages, teenage pregnancy, sex abuse/molestation and drug abuse.

BUNGOMA CHILDREN’S HOME Our mission in child care began back in 1997 when had children with based guardians supported by the church and other well-wishers donations have always been in the form of food, clothing and finances. We discovered that most support went to the needs of the entire caretaker’s family hence coming up with idea of buying land and building in the year 2003.
We now have about 3 acres of land on which we have buildings.
·One complete residential block for both boys and girls dormitories together with two roomed apartments foe two families. On the same block is also a class room.
·Office/store block
·Kitchen/Dinning hall block under construction, which stopped for lack of funds. Currently we have twelve (12) children age between 4 ½ and 8 years old staying in this home. We now have a school in this home with a mission of rising up leaders relevant to the society.
We are optimistic that this school shall grow to possibly a university level, those qualifying for university shall join and other can have vocational trainings. We are not centered on academic Excellency but quality education for all.

CITY OF REFUGE
Hope for the Nations is in coalition with Love Mercy, to fulfill a vision of creating a “City of Refuge” in the Turkana region. We have been given access to over 600 acres of good land located near the Turkwell River. Here, a water project begun by the country of Norway to create irrigation channels from the river had to be abandoned due to political reasons. We have been given permission by the government to try to re-open these channels and finish the project.
When successful, it has been estimated that these 600 acres could produce enough food to feed all of the Turkana region. We also have begun plans to build a community center according to our model in the other areas of outreach. Our dream is to change this desert region to a well-watered garden, one oasis at a time.
