THAILAND - Chiang Mai

Baan Khwaam Wang Mai“House of New Hope”

Chiang Mai, Thailand

HFTN Foundation Thailand is caring for the children of Thailand by helping teenage pregnant girls.  Providing housing, education, counseling, discipleship and vocational training we aim to change the cycle of poverty. Alongside of the residential program we have a work experience program and plan to also set up micro-enterprises.

Our Vision

Our focus remains “CHILDREN AT RISK”. By helping young mothers with education, life skills, counseling and discipleship training we work in the area of prevention.  This will ensure that their new born babies will indeed become “TOMORROW’S LEADERS” and not end up in an “AT RISK” situation.

Currently in Thailand

  • CHILDREN BORN TO SINGLE MOM’S ARE OFTEN SENT TO LIVE IN THE VILLAGE WITH A RELATIVE
  • FORCED TO LIVE IN IMPOVERISHED CONDITIONS, NOT RECEIVING PROPER FOOD, EDUCATION OR HEALTHCARE
  • “AT RISK” TO THOSE LOOKING TO PROFIT FROM THAILAND’S INFAMOUS SEX   TRADE (50% OF PROSTITUES WORKING IN BANGKOK ARE UNDER 14 YEARS OLD)
  • CHILDREN ARE ALSO USED AS “CARRIERS” IN CROSS BORDER DRUG SMUGGLING
  • CHILDREN ARE ALSO USED FOR BEGGING OR SELLING FLOWERS IN THE LOCAL BARS
  • IT’S ESTIMATED THAT 300,000 WOMEN PER YEAR, OR 822 PER DAY SEEK TO HAVE AN ABORTION IN THAILAND (Bangkok Post, July 2000

What we will do

We will provide a home for young girls both during and after pregnancy. We will offer them the opportunity to be trained in a viable vocation and help them obtain a job that provides a sustainable income. We will help them make an informed decision about the future care of their child and will help them through the process of the option they choose, whether that be to raise the baby themselves or to have the baby adopted.

The Home

  •  PROVIDE A HOME FOR SINGLE PREGNANT GIRLS
  •  PROVIDE EDUCATION & VOCATIONAL TRAINING
  •  PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE AND COUNSELLING
  •  PROVIDE DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING
  •  HELP THEM FIND ADEQUATE EMPLOYMENT
  •  HELP THEM SECURE THEIR OWN RESIDENCE

Meeting the need for shelter

We want to start with a small home to accommodate 4-6 girls, a live in house parent and 1 staff member.  This will allow the girls to have a home both during and after their pregnancy.

The length of their stay will be determined on an individual basis depending upon education required, health, counselling and the mother's ability to support herself and her child.

Meeting the nedd for education & training

We want to offer classes in reading and writing Thai to those unable to do so. This will either be on site or through other courses currently availalble.

We would also like to offer classes in ESL on site. This is a huge asset when seeking employment.

There are vocational training programs availalbe through the Thai government as well as other NGO's in Chiang Mai. We want to help them evaluate a career chocie and connect them with the corresponding educational facility.

Meeting the need for couselling and healthcare

We want to help each girl to receive the medical care she needs by qualified medical staff.

Is she doesn't have a birth certificate or citizenship papers this could be a more complicated process and we hope to be able to assist here with processing the necessary paperwork so that she receives the care she requires.

Depending upon her background she may need some counselling as well, and throught the resources available here we want to help her access the care available for her.

Meeting the need for discipling training

We will have a mature Christian hose Mom who is a Thai National living in the home. She will be able to offer spiritual guidance to the girls as well as attend church with them.  Daily devotions and bible study will be part of their cirriculum in the home.

Meeting the need for a self-sustainable life

We want to do everything possible to help each girl get to a place where  she will be able to provide adequate food, shelter and health care for both herself and her child.

We want her to be able to budget her income and access any programs that will assit this goal.

We will help her develop life-skills such as learning how to cook nutritional meals and day to day house keeping.

We want to be a continued support system so that she is never left without any options where she would put herself or her child at risk.

By meeting these objectives we are taking the necessary steps to help secure the future of the child. It is also strategic move in stopping the cycle of poverty that so many continue to be born into.
