MALAWI : Hope Village - Micro Enterprise

At Hope Village we have several micro enterprise projects, mainly agricultural ones, such as a vegetable garden, fish pond and chicken farms. With these projects we want to be able to provided food to our daycare programme for free or at a reduced cost.

We also want to look at ways we can help the guardians in the local communities start businesses of their own.

For a full list of all the projects that need sponsorship please email us at Hopevillage@hftn.co.uk.

Here are just a few of the most needy projects:

DRIP IRRIGATION KIT PROJECT

With the heat, dry ground and lack of water farming is extremely difficult and many of the guardians of our children have gardens but struggle to grow vegetables to help feed their families.

Simple drip irrigation kits that are specially designed to be used by villagers help save water and reduce labour and energy costs. The controlled application of water also reduces growth of weeds.

We would like to buy 7 kits ranging in sizes and also a treadle pump which is used to pump water from a water source to the land.

* For $264 you can help provide a drip irrigation kit to one of our guardians and so help them to become self sufficient.

CHICKEN FARM

Our chicken farm will be a good source of eggs for our day care program and also provide an income when we sell to local villages.

Initially though there will be an outlay for food as they grow from being chicks to a stage where they produce eggs and also a wage for worker looking after them.

* For $845 you can help cover all the costs for a whole year until the chicken farm is fully up and running and bringing in a profit.

* For $75 you can purchase 10 chickens.

The wise little piggy who built his home with bricks

Ok so our pigs didn't actually build their home and there are no wolves around to try and blow it down but the new pig house has been completed. The pigs were moved from their temporary home into their new pig home which comes complete with their own personal baths and sleeping areas.

You would have thought they would be happy but boy did they make a lot of nosie when we moved them!!

I just love this photo even though you cant see the building so I will post another later on.

We have been seeking training for our staff on how to properly raise pigs and have found a reputable trainer who willl train all 7 of the Micro Enterprise staff for $100, so if you would like to help with this cost please make an online donation.

    Cotton planting picking possibilities

A Malawian cotton company has recently started a farming project close to Hope Village and hearing about the work we are doing with orphans and widows their Director came to visit the project.

He has offered to help pay for the preparation of some land on Hope Village so the children can learn about planting cotton and when it is harvested any funds raised will be donated to our day care programme.

He has also hired out our tractor giving us some much needed income and would like to help in fundraising for the project. Who knows what is going to happen but it sure has given our micro enterprise department a much needed boost.

What do you call a pig with three eyes?

    A Piiig

In our recent trip to the UK we met up with a wonderful lady who had lost her son in the London bombings. We knew her son and is was so touching to meet with her and hear her story.

She asked whether Hope Village needed money to buy any animals and we told her about our plan to raise pigs. In memory of her son she likes to donate to charity by buying an animal in his name for people as an allternative gift. She gave us the money to buy a pig and the next day rang us to say that she was talking to a friend about the pig and her friend also wanted to buy a pig in memory of someone she had lost. The same day she also bumped into another friend and on sharing the story she also wanted to buy a pig in memory of a lost loved one.

So in total we had the money to buy three pigs. God is so good and when we came to buy them we were able to actually buy 5 pigs.

Hopefully it wont be too long before we have little piglets running around!

Which side of a duck has the most feathers?

    The outside obviously!

So our ducks are breeding really well and we have quite a flock. If you are a vegetarian you may not want to read on.

Once the ducks are fully grown they will be sold and we may even buy some here at Hope Village for a new years dinner. If only our orange trees were fully grown and bearing fruit we could have duck a'lorange courtesy of the Hope Village Farm.

    Snappy Suprise

We often have people coming to our door selling things. We have been offered, mangoes, honey, wicker baskets, fish and all sorts of things. So we were wondering what to expect when someone came to sell something and got quite a surprise when he pulled out a crocodile.

The kids wanted to keep it as a pet but then most pets don't try and eat you when they are fully grown. It was tempting, perhaps we could open a crocodile farm as a micro enterprise project!!
