Hope For The Nations

Learn more about this Program Program: CHILDREN AFFECTED BY CONFLICT & WAR

Wars have changed: today wars are primarily civil wars and civilians are targets rather than collateral damage. Today many warring groups specifically target women and children in order to spread fear through a population. This has led to a situation in which armed conflict disproportionately affects children.

Children who live in conflict zones or who have been through a war have suffered in many ways and need many different forms of assistance to regain a semblance of normalcy. Although children are extremely resilient, conflict makes children more vulnerable to the effects of their broken environment:

  • many have lost their family and friends;
  • many have lost their homes;
  • their community - and sense of community - was damaged;
  • Access to health care and education have been disrupted;
  • many have experienced physical trauma due to injury, illness, lack of nutrition or abuse;
  • Many have experienced emotional trauma from witnessing violence, losing loved ones, or being abused.

Hope for the Nations is particularly concerned about these children and seeks to address their needs using many different approaches. Explore the different projects that HFTN supports and consider how you can get involved.

Project
UGANDA - Gulu: Village of Hope

Project Image

Village of Hope in Gulu is a community for child-mothers.

A child-mother is a girl that was abducted by the LRA rebels & either escaped or was rescued. Many have been in captivity up to 15 years & return with their children - many are not welcomed back into their clan as they have children fathered by rebels.

Young child-mothers are the epitome of the human tragedy of the war in the north of Uganda. They are victims of the most vicious circumstances.

The repercussions of a 20 year civil war in Uganda are still being felt. Thousands of children, child-mothers and child-soldiers have emerged from the bush. They are in desperate need of assistance and rehabilitation.

The families that reside at Village of Hope will benefit from an on-site school and medical clinic. In addition, Village of Hope endeavors to help give the women back a sense of their dignity and self respect. Projects such as the craft skills program, adult literacy classes, and the farm project have been set up.

Our partner organization, ACTION International, is a non-denominational Christian organization that is works in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa.
