Hope For The Nations

Learn more about this Program Program: CHILDREN IN EXTREME POVERTY

All of the children that Hope for the Nations works with are 'at risk' because of the effects of extreme poverty. Poverty impacts children because it hurts families. There are a number of ways in which it does this.

Poverty is a barrier to accessing health services. HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB affect millions of parents each year; without access to treatment, parents are unable to get well, earn a living or care for their children. Sometimes this means that their children are orphaned.

Poverty impacts a family's ability to provide food, shelter and education for all of their family members. In extreme poverty conditions, families may send their children to work rather than to school; in the worst scenario, children are employed in the worst forms of labour or parents sell their children into the trafficking network.

Poverty, in a variety of ways, feeds the cycle of violence in countries that are caught in conflict. Not only does this violence kill parents and children, it also causes major upheaval in the lives of families and communities,  destroying family assets and future opportunities.

Without strategic interventions, poverty tends to be passed from one generation to another. Hope for the Nations believes that by intervening in the lives of the children who are most disadvantaged by poverty - orphans and vulnerable children - we can begin the process of change and the cycle of poverty can be broken. "Today's orphans" can be "tomorrow's leaders".

Project
GHANA - Accra : Agape Academy

Project Image

From a vision borne from Reverends Rick and Donna Whitcomb’s desire to provide the orphans with quality education, to a school that strives for excellence, the Agape Academy is changing lives.

Now in its second year of existence, the Academy teaches 88 pupils, from grades 1 to grade 12. There is now a team made up of 10 teachers and two support staff.

The phenomenal success and growth of the Academy has resulted in a need for a purpose-built block, allowing the original Children’s Home to return to being just that - a home for the children. Currently the building is used as both a home and a school for the children.

We believe God wants us to break ground for this project in early 2010. But to achieve this, we need you! The cost of building a block that includes 12 classrooms, a library, a study room a teacher’s lounge and offices will be $450,000. This is approximately $25,000 per room. In addition to the construction costs, we are also raising funds so that we can furnish the school as well as meet our ongoing expenses.

Our most urgent need is to raise $100,000 now in order to begin site preparation work and begin laying the foundation. And for any of you who have experience in construction, we invite you to Ghana. Whether you’re a foreman, mason, carpenter or you’re just good with your hands, we can use you.

Your best donation now or your service as a volunteer will help us unlock the full potential of all the children at Agape Children’s Home.

Poultry Farm for the Home

Our Agape Community is home to approximately 100 people. As a community, the foster parents can further support themselves and their children all year round with just a start-up capital of less than USD$2,000 from you! To launch this small enterprise on behalf of our families, we need to buy 500 chicks, feeding and drinking troughs, as well as feedstock.

Skills Training Center

Unemployment amongst the youth continues to be high in Ghana. The best way to ensure you make a living is by learning a trade. The most popular trade in Ghana for girls is sewing and the most popular skill for boys is carpentry. We want to make sure that all our children leave our care with a good education and a skill. The Skills Training Center is a brand new initiative that we are excited about. Help us to make a difference in their lives now and long into the future by providing the funds to buy ten sewing machines and an assortment of tools for the carpentry shop. In total we need to raise USD$5,000.

A New Well

Have you ever stopped to think about the number of times you turn on your tap in any one day? When you’re gasping for water, it is right there, clean and ready for you to drink. When you want to wash off the worries of your day, you can sink into a nice warm bubble bath. Where would you be without clean potable water at your disposal? Now imagine living in a society where something so essential was often scarce. In Ghana potable water is not so readily available and large communities live without plumbed-in water systems. There are many alternatives including wells, and at the Agape Children’s Home in Oyarifa, Ghana we need an extra well to meet the needs of our community. The total cost of drilling a well is USD$30,000. Any donation, big or small will help us keep our growing foster village alive and well.
