Hope For The Nations

Learn more about this Program Program: CHILDREN IN EXTREME POVERTY

All of the children that Hope for the Nations works with are 'at risk' because of the effects of extreme poverty. Poverty impacts children because it hurts families. There are a number of ways in which it does this.

Poverty is a barrier to accessing health services. HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB affect millions of parents each year; without access to treatment, parents are unable to get well, earn a living or care for their children. Sometimes this means that their children are orphaned.

Poverty impacts a family's ability to provide food, shelter and education for all of their family members. In extreme poverty conditions, families may send their children to work rather than to school; in the worst scenario, children are employed in the worst forms of labour or parents sell their children into the trafficking network.

Poverty, in a variety of ways, feeds the cycle of violence in countries that are caught in conflict. Not only does this violence kill parents and children, it also causes major upheaval in the lives of families and communities,  destroying family assets and future opportunities.

Without strategic interventions, poverty tends to be passed from one generation to another. Hope for the Nations believes that by intervening in the lives of the children who are most disadvantaged by poverty - orphans and vulnerable children - we can begin the process of change and the cycle of poverty can be broken. "Today's orphans" can be "tomorrow's leaders".

JUNGLE GYM RENOVATION PROJECT

Most of the local children here don't have toys or fun places to go and so they creatively make their own toys out of old pieces of wire and cans of soda, or an old bike tyre and a stick to roll ir around with.

We have a wonderful play area at Hope Village called the jungle gym which has a zip slide, swings, climbing frame and a moving bridge. The kids absolutely love it and there is never a day when it is not in use.

Termites and extreme weather conditions have really taken their toll and so now the jungle gym is in need of repair and maintenance.

Will you become a jungle gym champion and help raise the funds so that our kids can have a place where fun and laughter abound?

* For $400 you can help us to repair and maintain the jungle gym.

So this is the main structure at our jungle gym which the kids climb up to get to the zip slide.

There should be a floor but unfortunately over time it has been damaged by rain and termites and now the kids cannot climb up or at least they are not supposed to, but at times they cant resist balancing on the poles to get to the slide!

    Friendly Fun

On coming back from town the other day we were suprised to see over 50 kids playing at the jungle gym with a large group playing some kind of game.

We stopped to ask one of the house parents what was going on and he told us that the children from our homes and those who come to our daycare centre had invited other children from the local village to come and play a game together.

How wonderful and thoughtful of the kids and what a great use of the play area. Even more reason why we need to try and keep it well maintained and perhaps even build a few extra swings and things to play on!

Love your posts and the project. Working hard to find some champions for Malawi! Might have some kids who'd like to take on the cause!

    Great work, Paul. Kirsten
